Privacy & COPPA Compliance | Aletheia Support

Aletheia is built for children, so parents stay in control of their children's accounts and data.

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to online services directed at children under 13. Aletheia is designed with COPPA's requirements in mind:

Parent-controlled child profiles: only parents create and manage child accounts.
Parental consent: you must verify your email and give parental consent before you can add a child.
Parental access: you can review your children's activity, download your family's data, and delete child profiles or your account.
Limited child details: Aletheia asks for a display name and age range, not a child's full name or birthdate.

What Data We Keep

About parents

Name and email address.
Sign-in method, such as password, Google, or Apple.
Billing status and references to your Stripe customer and subscription.
Account settings, feedback, and support requests.

About children

Parents provide:

Display name or nickname.
Age range and grade level.
Subjects and learning preferences.
Sign-in settings, such as a PIN or child email account.

Created during learning

AI tutor conversations.
Homework Helper sessions, including uploaded homework photos.
Quiz results, flashcards, and study guides.
Placement check questions, your child's answers, and how each answer was graded. These are stored so the check can adapt and your child can pick up where they left off.
Mastery and progress data.
Learn Together room messages between siblings.
Usage data, such as session time and feature activity.

Who Can See Your Child's Data

You and any co-parent in your family have full parent access, including conversations, settings, and Download My Data.
Caregivers you invite, such as grandparents, see only the children you choose. They can view progress summaries, learning time, streaks, subject progress, insights, and achievements, and they can send avatar gifts. They can't read conversations or change settings. You can revoke a caregiver's access at any time from Settings → Family. See Co-Parents & Caregivers.
Siblings in a Learn Together room see the messages shared in that room.

AI Providers and Privacy Shield

To create tutor responses, Aletheia sends your child's messages and the context the AI needs to AI model providers. Safety checks also send messages to an automated moderation service run by an AI provider. See Blocked Topics & Safety Controls.

Privacy Shield is available on Family and Family+ plans. Turn it on from Settings → Privacy → Enable Privacy Shield. When it's on:

AI tutor sessions, along with the quizzes, study guides, and session summaries made from them, go to AI providers Aletheia selected for privacy-focused terms. These are designed to limit how long providers keep requests and to keep your child's conversations out of model training.
Safety moderation runs through a Privacy Shield model instead of the standard moderation service.

Privacy Shield doesn't cover every feature yet. Homework Helper, placement checks, flashcard generation, and Learn Together still use Aletheia's standard AI providers.

What providers do with requests is governed by their own policies, which Aletheia doesn't control.

Note: Privacy Shield changes how AI providers handle requests. It doesn't change what Aletheia stores. Your child's conversations and learning history are still saved so you can review them and your child can keep learning.

Child Email, Google, Apple, and Private Relay

Parents can turn on a child email account for older learners by choosing PIN + Email Account when adding a child. You then pick how the account is set up:

Send setup email: your child gets a setup link. With it, they can create a password or connect Google or Apple sign-in.
Set password now: you create the first password yourself and share it with your child. No setup email is needed.

If your child connects Apple and uses Hide My Email, Apple may share a private relay address with Aletheia. That doesn't replace your child's account email. The email you entered stays the account and setup email, and the Apple sign-in is linked to the account separately.

Downloading Your Data

Go to Settings → Privacy and select Download My Data. You'll get a JSON file with:

Your parent profile, language, and weekly report settings.
Your parental consent records.
For each child profile that hasn't been deleted: profile and settings, subjects and topics, progress, AI tutor conversations, quiz results, and learning observations.

Other data, such as placement checks, Homework Helper sessions, flashcards, study guides, and Learn Together messages, isn't in this file. To request it, email privacy@aletheiatutor.com.

Deleting Data

Deletion can't be undone. Download your data first if you want a copy.

Deleting one child

Go to Children, open the child's profile, and select Settings.
Open the Danger zone tab and select Delete Child Profile.
Select Delete Profile to confirm.

This permanently removes that child's profile and learning data, including conversations, quiz results, Homework Helper sessions and uploaded photos, placement checks, flashcards, study guides, and progress. To hide a profile without deleting anything, archive it instead. See Archiving Profiles.

Deleting your account

Go to Settings → Privacy and select Delete All Data.
Type DELETE ALL MY DATA and select Confirm Delete All Data.

What happens next depends on your family:

If another parent shares your family, only your parent account and personal data are deleted. Your children's profiles and learning history stay with the other parent. If you were the account owner, the other parent becomes the owner.
If you're the only parent, your whole family account is deleted. That includes all child profiles and learning history, conversations and quiz results, uploaded homework and tutor chat images, caregiver access, and your parent account.

If you're the only parent and have a paid subscription, deletion can't go ahead while the subscription is active. Cancel it from Billing first. If you still can't delete after canceling, contact support.

If any part of the deletion fails, you'll see an error and nothing is reported as deleted. You can safely try again, or contact support.

What deletion doesn't cover

Billing records kept by our payment processor, Stripe.
Copies in routine database backups, which remain until those backups expire.

Data Retention

While your account is active: conversations and progress are kept so you can review them and your child can continue learning.
Archived profiles: hidden from active use but kept until you delete them.
Deleted profiles and accounts: removed as described in Deleting Data.

Reviewing Your Child's Activity

From your child's profile you can review AI tutor Conversations, subject progress, quizzes, and flashcard activity. Learn Together room messages can't be viewed from the parent dashboard yet.
