Privacy & COPPA Compliance

Aletheia is built for children, which means privacy is foundational — not an afterthought. Here's exactly how we handle data.

COPPA Compliance

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to online services directed at children under 13. Aletheia is fully COPPA compliant:

• No direct collection from children — children cannot enter personal information. All personal data (name, age) is entered by the parent.
• No advertising to children — Aletheia shows no ads to child users.
• No data selling — we never sell children's data to third parties.
• Parental consent required — parents create and control all child accounts.
• Parental access rights — parents can review, export, or delete their child's data at any time.

What Data We Collect

From parents:

• Email address and name (for your account)
• Payment information (processed by Stripe; we never see full card numbers)
• Country/region (for compliance and language)

From children (entered by parents):

• Nickname / first name
• Age

Generated during use:

• Conversation transcripts (stored securely, accessible only to the parent)
• Quiz scores and flashcard review data
• Usage metadata (session timestamps, feature usage)

How We Use Child Data

Child data is used exclusively to:

1. Power the AI tutoring experience (conversations are sent to our AI provider to generate responses)
2. Track learning progress
3. Improve subject recommendations

We do not use child conversations to train AI models without explicit consent.

Privacy Shield (Family & Family+ Plans)

Privacy Shield is our enhanced privacy mode for privacy-conscious families. When enabled:

• Conversations are routed through privacy-first AI infrastructure that contractually prohibits training on your data
• No conversation data is logged by AI providers beyond the immediate response
• A shield indicator appears in the tutor chat and on your dashboard

To enable: Settings → Privacy → Enable Privacy Shield (Family or Family+ plan required)

Data Retention

• Conversation history: Stored as long as your account is active
• After account deletion: All data is permanently deleted within 30 days
• Backups: Encrypted backups are retained for a short period after deletion for recovery purposes, then purged

Exporting Your Data

You can export your family's data directly from the app:

1. Go to Settings → Privacy
2. Use the data export feature to download your data
3. Select what to include and export

Deleting Your Account

To delete your entire account and all associated data:

1. Settings → Account → Delete Account
2. Confirm with your password
3. All data is scheduled for deletion within 30 days

This action is irreversible.
