When placement testing is on for a subject, your child takes a short, adaptive placement check before tutoring starts. Aletheia uses it to map what your child already knows, topic by topic, so tutoring doesn't start with material they've mastered.
Where to Find Placement Results
- Sign in to your parent account and go to Children.
- Click View Details on your child's card.
- In the Subjects section, subjects with a completed placement show a Placed badge.
- Click Curriculum on the subject card to open the subject page.
The Placement Results card appears on the subject page once your child has finished (or skipped) the placement check. Placement is set up separately for each subject.
How to Read the Results
Placement results are shown per topic, not as a single grade level. Each topic in the subject gets one of three levels:

| Unknown | Will learn from scratch |
The card also shows:
- Completed [date]: when the placement check was finished.
- Counts of mastered, familiar, and unknown topics.
- A short summary written for parents, when one is available.
- A confidence percentage next to each topic, showing how sure the assessment is about that topic.
- A starting-point note: tutoring starts from the recommended topic based on the results.
The first six topics are shown; click Show N more topics to see the rest.
Note: A lower confidence percentage usually means the check had less evidence for that topic. It isn't a judgment about your child.
If your child chose to skip the placement check, every topic shows as Unknown. Topic changes are only available for a completed check, so if you'd like real results, click Reset Placement so your child can take it.
How Placement Affects Progress
Topics marked Mastered count toward the subject's progress on the subject page. Familiar and Unknown topics are covered through normal tutoring.
How to Change a Topic's Placement
You know your child best. You can change the level for any individual topic:
- On the Placement Results card, click the arrow at the right of the topic's row.
- Under Override placement to:, choose Mastered, Familiar, or Unknown.
The change saves right away. Topics you've changed show 100% confidence to mark them as set by you.
Note: If you see a message that the placement result changed since you viewed it, refresh the page and try again.
How to Reset the Placement
Resetting lets your child retake the placement check for that subject:
- On the Placement Results card, click Reset Placement.
- In the Reset Placement Assessment? dialog, click Reset Placement to confirm.
If placement testing is turned on, your child is offered a new placement check the next time they start tutoring in that subject.
Aletheia doesn't re-run placement automatically as your child progresses. A new placement check only happens when you reset it.
How to Turn Placement Testing On or Off
Each subject has its own Placement Testing switch on the subject page (below the placement results):
- Placement test enabled: a new or reset placement check is offered before tutoring begins.
- Placement test disabled: your child goes straight to tutoring. Placement stays off until you turn it back on.
Turning placement off while your child is partway through a placement check cancels that check.
When to turn it off: If you want your child to work through a subject in order from the start, turn placement off for that subject.
Some subjects follow an imported curriculum's lesson plan. Those subjects go straight to the curriculum's lessons and don't run a placement check.
What Aletheia Stores From a Placement Check
To run the adaptive check and let your child pause and resume, Aletheia stores the placement questions, your child's answers, and how each answer was graded. These are used to produce the results above.
- What you can see: the topic levels, confidence percentages, and parent summary on the Placement Results card. Individual questions and answers aren't shown in the parent dashboard.
- After a reset: the earlier attempt is kept in your child's assessment history.
- Deletion: placement data is removed if you permanently delete the subject or the child's profile. See Managing Subjects and Archiving Child Profiles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some topics look wrong. What should I do? Change the level for those topics using the arrow on each row. If most of the results look off, click Reset Placement so your child can retake the check.
Can I set a single starting grade for the subject? No. Placement works topic by topic. You can change individual topics or reset the placement.
Can I see the actual questions from the placement check? Not in the parent dashboard. The topic levels and summary show what the check learned from your child's answers.
